About NURC
The National Underwater Robotics Challenge (NURC) is a hands-on underwater robotics competition that introduces participants to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through real-world problem solving. Teams design, build, and operate remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to complete missions inspired by challenges found in the underwater industry.
NURC is presented by the Firewheel STEM Institute, an Arizona nonprofit organization committed to making STEM education accessible, engaging, and hands-on. Through competitions, educational programs, and community partnerships, Firewheel STEM Institute creates opportunities for students to develop the skills, confidence, and curiosity they need to succeed both in school and beyond.
But NURC is about more than building underwater robots. It's about giving students the opportunity to think like engineers, work as a team, overcome obstacles, and learn by doing. Along the way, participants build technical skills, gain confidence, and discover what a future in STEM can look like.
Over the years, NURC has brought together students, mentors, educators, volunteers, and industry professionals from across the country. Many alumni have gone on to study engineering, technology, marine science, and other STEM fields, with some even pursuing careers in underwater robotics. That's what NURC is all about - inspiring students to explore new possibilities and helping them take the first step toward a future in STEM.
Whether you're a student building your first ROV, a mentor sharing your experience, a volunteer supporting the event, or a sponsor investing in the next generation, you're an important part of the NURC community. Together, we're inspiring future engineers, innovators, and problem-solvers - one mission at a time.
